Find the perfect venue

How do you choose the Perfect Location for Your Wedding?

Choosing the venue will be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding, so it’s important to start considering your options right away.

The venue you pick will determine the amount of guests you can invite, the location of your wedding and, of course—the style.

Where do you start?
Start by asking yourself questions about the kind of event you want. Will it be formal or informal? A traditional wedding or a quirky party that showcases your personality? Will it be held at night or during the day? Inside or outdoors? Is having a rustic garden ceremony or elegant gourmet food important to you?

By identifying the most important elements of your dream wedding before you start looking for a venue, you can really narrow down your search.

How much work do you want to take on?
Some locations will require lot of work to set up. You may have your heart set on a more casual party in a rustic barn—but who’s going to clear out the hay, haul in the tables, set up the Porta Potties, and arrange the lighting?

There’s also Mother Nature to keep in mind. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony or reception, you’ll need a backup plan in the case of rain, which means twice as much work.

On the other hand, a reception hall usually has staff that is well equipped to take care of the dirty work for you, including post-party cleanup.

What’s included?
While it might seem as if a backyard wedding could be a money-saver, you must consider the extras you may need to rent. You’ll be responsible for supplying every fork, knife, table and linen. There are probably other things you haven’t thought of like generators for the band, a rented floor to cover the lawn, extra restrooms, a fire extinguisher, a tent in case of rain and space for parking.

Whatever the venue, be sure to get information on whether it has a liquor license, can house your head count or if you need liability insurance. If they have a caterer they work with, find out how experienced the caterer is in doing similar events. If you’re considering a less traditional location such as a botanical garden or a park, you’ll need to know where the food will be prepared and how it will be served. Not all caterers have the resources to execute a flawless event as you may find in a traditional venue.
